A bound typescript titled "War Times in Mountain Cove, Letters of Nancy Hunt to Refugee Friends in York State, 1862-1865," consisting of nine letters written by Nancy Hunt (1820-1891) in Fayette County to Joseph H, and Francis Hopping in Auburn, New York. The letters were transcribed and annotated by Charles A. Goddard. There is also a letter from W. Beverley, one of the commissioners for Lord Fairfax on the survey of the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers (1737 July 26) to William Fairfax, and Fairfax's reply, discussing the report on the survey and its maps. Jenkins (b. 1870) Diaries and Photographs, 1890-1934. Eighteen diaries, 1890-1934, of Samuel R. Jenkins, a civil engineer from Grafton. There are lengthy entries for the period, 1890-1892, when Jenkins was a student at West Virginia University. He did surveys and supervised construction work in various parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, read widely, and commented on works of Henry George, John W. Draper, and John Fiske. There are photographs of Jenkins and of an engineering job done by him for the American Bridge Company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, in 1902. There is also a student laboratory manual containing direction for a course of experiments in chemistry.

Mainly papers of Samuel T. Tolbert, a onetime constable of Lewis County and postmaster at Frenchton, who operated a general store and acted as agent and surveyor for out-of-state landowners. Included are the papers of Zadock Lanham, J.S. Wilson, John L. Jacob, and W.C. Tolbert. The private account books relate to general merchandising, coal sales, dental practice, a debating society, distilling, carriage manufacturing, hotels, steamboat freighting, the Ohio County Centennial Association, Ohio Valley Glass Company, Wheeling Masonic Hall Association, West Virginia Exposition and Fair Association, and the settlement of the Ebenezer Zane trust. The collection contains record books and papers covering a period from the formation of the county of Monongalia in 1776 to 1933. The collection is broken prior to 1796. There are approximately six hundred thousand pieces including papers on civil and criminal cases, bonds, deeds, wills, licenses, settlements of public offices, school reports, and other papers commonly filled or recorded at county courthouses in the Virginias. There are two hundred and seventy-five volumes covering a period from 1781 to 1933 and embracing the record books of District Courts, Superior Courts of Law, Circuit 1 Superior Courts of Law and Chancery, Circuit Courts, County Courts, Justices of the Peace, and various books of record of the several county offices. With this collection have been deposited in the University Library some two hundred volumes of printed matter including Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia (1836-1860, broken), Acts of the Legislature of West Virginia (1863-1932, broken), Journals and Bills of the West Virginia House of Delegates (1866-1897, broken), Journals and Bills of the West Documents of West Virginia Senate (1866-1903, broken), Public Documents (1897-1902), and miscellaneous reports of various state offices and agencies from 1876 to 1932. Wilkinson, a resident of Bridgeport, recorded in this book the record of surveys which he did for private individuals, county courts, and mining companies in Doddridge, Harrison, and Marion counties.

The day book and papers of Dr. Squire Bosworth and family. Squire Bosworth was one of the earliest physicians of Randolph County, and his day book records details of his medical practice indicating common procedures and remedies as well as charges and costs during the early nineteenth century. Bosworth was also a deputy and county clerk of Randolph County, and included among the papers are court documents. Along with his son, Squire Newton Bosworth, the family acquired interests in landholding which is reflected in deeds, surveys, correspondence and tax receipts from Texas and West Virginia. Among the correspondence is an 1885 letter from William L. Wilson surveying his Congressional re-election possibilities.

Seven notebooks and booklets, one folder of miscellaneous material, notes and class materials of Daniel Hirst, who taught school in Loudoun County, Virginia, around 1826 and later. A manuscript surveyor's book of first five-mile section of the Weston and Fairmont Road. Haymond was Engineer for the Weston & Fairmont Turnpike Co., 1849. Papers of the Tavenner family of western Virginia, including correspondence, newspaper clippings, maps, and other material. Much of the material in this collection regards the Civil War. The Tavenner family was sympathetic to the Confederate cause. One member of the family, William Cabell Tavenner, served in the Confederate army; his letters are part of the collection. This collection also contains material related to families allied to the Tavenner family by marriage, particularly the Withers family, including material regarding Alexander Scott Withers and his book Chronicles of Border Warfare . Correspondence includes business and personal letters to and from St. George Tucker Brooke and Charles Frederick Tucker Brooke, a Rhodes Scholar and Shakespearean authority at Yale; letters between Francis (Frank) Brooke to Mrs. Mary Brooke while he served in the U.S. and France during World War I (1918-1919); and letters from James Harold in Ireland to his son James in New York (ca. 1870). Other items include a surveyor's call book for Tucker County (1856-1857), which includes notes on the Tucker-Randolph County boundary; "A Narrative of My Life: for My Family," 1763-1849 by Judge Francis T. Brooke; a manuscript recipe book (1814); and microfilmed copy of typescript "Autobiography of St. George Tucker Brooke, Written for His Children" (reel 3). A hand written journal kept by Col. Luther Haymond of Harrison County, [W.] Va., from 1830-1833, telling of his travels and experiences at the time. The journal notes Haymond's observations while traveling by horse from Harrison County, West Virginia, to Baltimore, Maryland. There are descriptions of Baltimore, Romney, Charles Town, and other places.

Financial and Legal Papers, 1859-1926. Personal papers of Noah Henderson of Monongalia County, West Virginia, consisting mainly of incoming correspondence and financial and legal documents from 1859 to 1926. Collection chiefly contains deeds, state and county tax receipts, a survey and plat, and oil and gas lease documents from the 1860s to the 1900s. Other financial documents from 1910 to 1926 relate to bank accounts and settlement of Henderson's estate after his death in 1920. Letters from relatives in the 1890s and 1900s primarily describe the correspondents' health and weather. Also included are several letters written to Henderson by Alpheus Garrison, a Union soldier during the Civil War in the 17th West Virginia Infantry, between 1863 and 1866. Garrison writes briefly about winter quarters, a snowball fight, food, Confederate prisoners, and his mill.
